The Agricultural & Forestal District (AFD) Program was established in accordance with the Code of Virginia to preserve agricultural, forestal, and open-space land in Clarke County. The program is voluntary and is intended to protect the County’s rural character and provide safeguards for farming and forestry operations.

The Agricultural & Forestal District Advisory Committee is responsible for advising the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors on the creation, review, modification, continuation, or the termination of districts. The Committee renders expert advice as to the nature of farming and forestry and agricultural and forestal resources within the district and their relation to the entire county.

The Board of Supervisors appoints members to serve on the Agricultural & Forestal District Advisory Committee in accordance with the Code of Virginia. Members represent agricultural, forestry, and land conservation interests within Clarke County. Code of Virginia Section 15.2-4304 requires the Advisory Committee to have 10 members -- four landowners that are engaged in agricultural or forestal production, 4 other landowners, the County's Commissioner of the Revenue, and a member of the Board of Supervisors.
