At its June meeting, the Clarke County Board of Supervisors approved the following statement by consensus:
The Clarke County Board of Supervisors has been made aware that Clarke County is within the study area for a new proposed 765-kV electrical transmission line project. This 260-mile project between Putnam County, West Virginia and Frederick County, Maryland would involve new structures at least 150 feet tall to transport electricity along the selected route. Specific route alternatives will be shown to the public at upcoming open houses led by Valley Link Transmission, a joint venture between Dominion Energy, First Energy Transmission, and Transource Energy. The open house scheduled in Clarke County will be held on July 7th from 4:00-7:30 p.m. at the Clarke County Fairgrounds Ruritan Building at 890 W. Main Street in Berryville.
While the project is not subject to approval from the County government, County officials will be independently evaluating the routes and their impact on the following:
Clarke County Comprehensive Plan and Various Component Plans
Properties in Conservation Easement held both by the Clarke County Easement Authority and other land trusts (over 25% of the County is in easement).
Scenic Highways
Natural Resources including streams, wetlands, karst, etc.
Cultural and Historic Resources, including lands and structures placed in the Virginia Landmarks Registry and the National Register of Historic Places, as well as nine rural historic districts that compose over 45% of the total County land area.
County-owned Facilities like Schools and Parks
Agricultural Lands, including lands in Agricultural & Forestal Districts and properties used for agri-tourism.
The Board of Supervisors strongly encourages citizens to participate in the open house on July 7 and to voice their opinions on the proposed transmission line. More information on the proposed transmission line can be found on the project website https://vltransmission.com/valley-north/
