BERRYVILLE, VA (Dec. 5, 2018) Clarke County Supervisor Terri T. Catlett, who represents the Millwood Voting District, has been elected to serve a two-year term as the Region 6 representative on the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) board of directors. Catlett is the fourth Clarke supervisor to represent county residents at the state level. Supervisor Barbara Byrd has served on the VACo board for the past four years. Former supervisors J. Michael Hobert and John Staelin also served on the VACo board.
Virginia has 95 counties, which VACO has divided into 13 regions; the number of board members per region is based on population. Region 6 is among the nine regions with only one representative. Region 6 is Clarke, Frederick, Greene, Madison, Page, Shenandoah, and Warren counties.
Catlett was elected to represent Region 6 during VACo’s annual business meeting in mid-November at the Omni Homestead in Bath County.
“It’s good for Clarke County to have representation on the VACo board,” Catlett said, noting that the board helps shape VACo’s legislative program. As a board member, Catlett will coordinate with supervisors from the other counties in Region 6 to discuss pertinent issues, and she will represent the region at four VACo meetings each year.
VACo exists to foster cooperation and unity of purpose among counties and advocate legislation in the interests of counties. Preservation of local self-government is a primary goal.
“I think Terri will do a wonderful job representing Clarke and the other Region 6 counties,” said Supervisor Barbara Byrd, who was first elected to represent Clarke's Russell Voting District in 1999.
First elected in 2015, Catlett began her four-year supervisor term in January 2016. She expects to run for re-election in 2019.
Clarke County is No. 73 on the list of Virginia counties by population and, at 178-square miles (113,920 acres), it is the eighth smallest county in the Commonwealth.
