Recycling and Waste Management in Clarke County

Clarke County participates in a regional landfill and recycling program, along with Frederick County and Winchester City.. Clarke County residents may use many of the convenience centers in addition to  the Frederick County landfill.  Clarke County residents may use the following convenience centers::

Clearbrook
Landfill Citizens Center

Residents of Berryville
The Town of Berryville offers curbside recycling in addition to weekly trash pickup.  Recycling bins are available free of charge from the Town office.  For more information visit the Town of Berryville website.

Clarke County Litter and Recycling Committee

The Clarke County Litter and Recycling Committee has been in existance since the mid 1980's in various forms.  The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality  (DEQ) provides funds for litter prevention and recycling grants to localities under a non-competitive grant program based on population and road miles. These grants have been awarded annually, since 1980, to localities for local litter prevention and recycling program implementation, continuation, and/or expansion.  Clarke County received $6,500 last year for the Litter and Recycling program. Purpose:               

An ad-hoc committee of volunteers formed to address energy waste and littered roads and rivers.
Mission:
  • To raise public awareness of environmental issues
  • To promote recycling to minimize our impact on the environment
  • To discourage littering to enhance our quality of life
Activities:         

  • Sponsoring recycling programs in Clarke County schools
  • Providing environmental education to county school children
  • Organizing road and river cleanups
  • Posting signage on county roads to discourage littering
  • Identifying litter and dumping violations to the authorities and helping obtain convictions.

The ONLY site locations that can be used by Clarke County Residents are:

Compactor Sites: Locations and Hours of Operation

Greenwood: Located near the intersection of Greenwood and Senseny roads behind the firehall (No trailers, please!)
Clearbrook: Located on Martinsburg Pike at Clearbrook Park
Double Toll Gate: Located on Front Royal Pike, just south of the Route 340 intersection

7 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day EXCEPT

Wednesdays -- CLOSED
Sundays -- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Regional Landfill
: Located on Landfill Road off of Sulpher Spring Road (Route 655), 2.2 miles from the Millwood Pike intersection
Landfill Citizens' Center: Monday thru Friday: 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday: 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Regional Landfill
Open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and on Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The landfill is closed on Sundays and certain holidays. The Frederick County Public Works Department operates a state-of-the-art Subtitle D sanitary landfill. Effective June 30, 2007, tipping fees are: $45 per ton for commercial/industrial waste; $42 per ton for CDD and $24 per ton for municipal sludge.


Site closings: Easter Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day


Businesses must obtain a decal prior to utilizing the local landfill or pay at the window. Decals are free and may be obtained from the treasurer's office at 107 N. Kent St. A credit check may apply. Only waste which originates from Frederick and Clarke counties and the City of Winchester is accepted at the regional landfill.

GET DIRECTIONS

All landfill users and commercial haulers may pay at the time of disposal via MasterCard or Visa, check card or check. Infrequent users of the facility are encouraged to take advantage of these payment options, thus eliminating the need for monthly invoicing. Cash will not be accepted. Citizens hauling 1,000 pounds or more of debris to the landfill in a single load will be charged for the entire load at the time of disposal. The municipal tipping rate of $24 per ton shall apply.
