Absentee Voting
Registered voters may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot in person or by mail in the locality in which they are registered to vote (eligibility requirements are listed below). The deadlines for absentee voting may be found on our website under the Election Calendar.
Voting An Absentee Ballot In Person:
In-person absentee voting is available at the registrar's office, located at 101 Chalmers Court in Berryville, during regular office hours and additional Saturday hours, following the schedule located under the Election Calendar.
Voters must complete the VA Absentee Ballot Application and show proper identification or sign a voter form prior to voting the absentee ballot.
Voting An Absentee Ballot By Mail:
A VA Absentee Ballot Application must be completed and submitted for approval to the registrar's office prior to the absentee ballots being mailed. You may requested the registrar's office mail the application to you or you may download the VA Absentee Ballot Application from this website or the State Board of Elections' website. The absentee ballot package will be mailed to the address indicated on the application.
Military Personnel and Overseas Voters:
Military Personnel, their families, and overseas voters are permitted to receive the ballot via email upon request. Please click the following link for more information: Email Ballots
Eligibility Requirements To Vote Absentee:
Under Virginia law, a registered voter may qualify to vote absentee if they will be absent from the county on election day for one of the following reasons. Supporting information may be required.
- Student or spouse of student
- Business
- Personal business or vacation
- Working or commuting to/from home for 11 or more hours between 6AM and 7PM
- First responder (law enforcement, fire fighter, EMT, search & rescue)
- Disability or illness
- Primary care-giver for a disabled/ill family member confined at home
- Pregnancy
- Confined, awaiting trial
- Confined, convicted of a misdemeanor
- An election official
- Religious obligation
- Active member of Armed Forces, spouse or dependent
- Temporarily residing outside the US
- Presidential/vice-presidential electors only
- Authorized representative of candidate or party
How are the absentee ballots counted?
Absentee Ballots, both in-person and by mail, are tabulated on Election Day in the Central Absentee Precinct (CAP) and are included in the total election results for the county.
